An in-person event for 200 Richmond Public Schools’ students featuring hands-on STEM activities, workshops from professionals, and career prospects for young talent.
In collaboration with Microsoft, GiSTEM is hosting “Thinking Big with Big Data,” a one-day, in-person event for 9th-12th grade students of Richmond Public Schools on October 2, 2023, at Dewey Gottwald Center, West Leigh Street, Richmond, Virginia. The event will focus on preparing young talent for big data and artificial intelligence-based careers through workshops by leading tech organizations.
Shatara Weaver, Vice President of GiSTEM, shared this about the upcoming event: “There is no doubt that Big Data and Machine Learning play significant roles in economic sustainability. With this event, GiSTEM, along with Microsoft, aim to introduce our future generations to STEM+B fields, and help them dream big with artificial intelligence and big data, ultimately enabling them to create a more sustainable future for the world.”
GiSTEM understands that it is crucial for the younger generations to learn how to approach real-world problems in a creative and scientific way, since modern problems demand modern solutions. Hence, educating the next generation in STEM-based learning is becoming increasingly important for schools and parents. Investigating how technological improvements might encourage and increase student engagement towards STEM is crucial since society urgently needs to engage students in STEM.
LaToya Mayfield, President of GiSTEM, elaborated further: “In order for students to achieve, they must have the information and abilities necessary to advance toward a bright future. We are all aware that a large part of who we are today is a result of our upbringing and early experiences. Hence, in order to prepare our children for a prosperous future, we must inspire them to lead a STEM-based lifestyle. Thinking Big with Big Data will help students experience what a STEM-based career would be like.”
