Reflecting on the Success of Thinking Big 2024 and Looking Ahead to 2025!

It's been a week since Thinking Big 2024 and we can’t help but reflect on the incredible energy that filled the Dewey Gottwald Center at the Science Museum of Virginia. Designed to inspire high school students from Richmond and Petersburg, this event delivered a unique experience that explored the vibrant world of manufacturing. The enthusiasm of students, educators, and professionals in attendance truly made this year’s event special. With a focus on hands-on activities and workshops, students dove into the mechanics of manufacturing, explored cutting-edge technologies, and learned about the diverse career opportunities this industry offers. From 3D printing demonstrations to robotics and advanced automation, the event provided a glimpse into the future of work and innovation.

Thinking Big 24 - Students in the main room

One of the standout workshops this year was on sustainable packaging by Smurfit Westrock. Students learned about the growing need for environmentally friendly solutions in manufacturing and how sustainable packaging plays a key role in reducing waste and conserving resources. This hands-on activity allowed students to design eco-friendly packaging, understanding the balance between functionality, material use, and environmental impact. The workshop not only emphasized innovation in manufacturing but also empowered students to think critically about how everyday items are packaged.

A special highlight of the day was the Dome Theater experience by Kings Dominion where students got a sneak peek into the manufacturing of Rapterra, a new coaster set to open in 2025 for the 50th year anniversary of the amusement park. The immersive visuals and sound in the Dome Theater brought the future of manufacturing to life, allowing students to see firsthand how STEM innovations are reshaping industries. The experience culminated with a thrilling front-seat point of view of the coaster, complete with twists and turns that filled the theater with excitement—sparking conversations about the future and inspiring students to think bigger about their own career paths.

The keynote address was another significant highlight of the event. Delivered by Dr. Latitia McCane at the Newport News Shipbuilding – The Apprentice School, the keynote focused on the wealth of opportunities available in both education and the workforce for students interested in STEM and manufacturing. The speaker shared insights into pathways to college and direct-to-work options, emphasizing that the manufacturing industry offers lucrative careers with room for growth. She shared five key points to success, encouraging students to make it a note in their phone to always reference.

Additionally, the speaker touched on the financial rewards within the apprentice school route, including scholarships, sponsorships, and competitive salaries, inspiring students to see the economic potential in pursuing careers in this field. The keynote provided practical advice and motivation for students to explore, focusing on the real-world impact they could make through hard work.

We were honored to welcome several esteemed sponsors and partners whose support was critical in making Thinking Big a success. A special shout-out goes to our Title Sponsor, Smurfit Westrock, whose unwavering support made this event possible. Their dedication to STEM education and nurturing the next generation of talent in manufacturing was felt by every student in attendance. We are deeply grateful for their partnership and look forward to continuing this impactful collaboration.
